Tilbury Shore Excursion: Wren & City Churches Walking Tour with Black Cab Transportation

This popular walking tour–available in 5,6 or 7 hour versions–explores the remarkable City Churches of London, focusing on the architectural genius of Sir Christopher Wren. This tour can be customised to your interest—perhaps you're an art enthusiast and want to see Damien Hirst's work at Great St. Bartholomew's, or a history buff eager to learn about the London "Cockney" at St. Mary-le-Bow. As an added bonus we'll also visit the Temple of Mithras—a free-to-enter interactive historical recreation of a “Roman Temple for soldiers”.

Tilbury to Central London

Step off your ship and straight into a classic London icon. We’ll meet you right at Tilbury Port in your own private Black Cab for a seamless and comfortable transfer to the heart of the capital. Your driver, Shane Healy—a qualified Westminster Guide—knows these streets better than anyone and will point out a few interesting snippets and landmarks as the city unfolds during your journey.

Upon arrival, you’ll meet your dedicated guide, Lee Cooper, to begin your exploration of London’s historic streets. Although this is primarily a walking tour, you have the unique advantage of having Shane and the cab remain on hand throughout the tour. This provides peace of mind and flexibility; you can hop back into the cab for a quick rest, whisk away to a landmark slightly further afield, or easily navigate areas where steps and uneven pavement might pose a challenge. Whether you choose to follow Lee’s expert route or customise your own, you have the ultimate support team to ensure you see London exactly how you want to.

Discover London's Historic Churches

In the 17th century, there were 107 churches within the 'Square Mile' of London. 86 of these were destroyed in the Great Fire of London and 51 were subsequently rebuilt. The Blitz of World War II destroyed many more, and some were not rebuilt. Today, 23 churches remain, along with 4 towers and partial ruins of two churches that now serve as places of contemplation.

As a former cab driver and a member of the FCC (Friends of the City Churches), I'm passionate about sharing the rich history and stories hidden within these often overlooked gems. These dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to open the churches to the public, allowing us to experience their unique beauty and delve into their fascinating past. I've personally "watched" a few churches so far, contributing to their preservation, and I'm eager to share more of these hidden treasures with you in the future.

Naturally, this tour will include a visit to St. Paul's Cathedral, Wren's masterpiece and a cornerstone of London's Baroque architecture. We'll also explore other captivating sites:

• St. Bride's Church: Explore this iconic church, long associated with journalists and newspapers, and admire its elegant Wren-designed architecture.
• St Stephen Walbrook: Discover the fascinating history of the first Samaritans branch, which operated from a crypt beneath this church.
• Holy Sepulchre London: Located across from the Old Bailey, this church is famously mentioned in the nursery rhyme "Oranges and Lemons." as "the Bells of Old Bailey".

• St Martin, Ludgate: Designed by Wren, this church boasts a fascinating inscription claiming that Cadwallo, King of the Britons, is buried within its grounds.
• St Botolph's Aldgate: Delve into the history of this church, with records dating back to 1115.

• St. Dunstan-in-the-West: Marvel at the unique façade of this Fleet Street church, featuring a chiming clock with intriguing giant figures.
• St Olaves: Witness the resilience of this church, whose bells were melted during the war and later recast using the original foundry.
• Allhallows Aldgate: Another popular destination with its own unique charm.

Return to Tilbury

After your London experience, Shane will escort you back to Tilbury Port. We'll coordinate the return journey to ensure you arrive with plenty of time before your ship sails.
